Finding out about a problem early can mean that treatment is more effective. Finding out if you have a health problem or an increased chance of a health problem can help people make better informed decisions about their health. Screening, check-ups and medical appointments can reduce the chance of developing a condition or its complications.
Taking the time to attend health screenings can help assess overall wellbeing and detect any potential disease or health risks before they happen. Some health problems are not always immediately visible – this is where health screening can literally be a life saver.
People might have concerns about taking time off work for a check-up, screening appointment or finding a sexual health clinic. They might also worry about confidentiality being broken, or reactions from their peers.
How you can make a difference:
- Create a workplace culture where a person feels they can be open, with mutual trust and confidentiality
- Promote and signpost to screening, guidance and support services for all aspects of health in your Health and Wellbeing policies, communications and campaigns
- Provide flexibility to attend medical appointments and check-ups which can avoid sickness absence and prevent problems arising in the future that may impact on health and wellbeing
- Employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled employees or employees with a long term health condition for medical appointments related to their disability or long-term health condition
Promoting and supporting health awareness in your workplace provides an opportunity for employees to reflect on their lifestyle in a safe environment. This empowers staff to make proactive choices about their health, boosting their productivity and motivation.
Employees who access health screening opportunities, health check-ups and attend medical appointments and clinics when they have concerns about their health, benefit their overall health and the business they work for.
The benefits include:
- Employees who feel healthy and fit can stay focused on the tasks in front of them and keep their productivity high throughout the workday
- Through screenings, it is possible to identify health problems and prevent them becoming serious conditions that will keep people away from work
- With screening, health checks and access to treatment, people may also become more aware of their lifestyle, motivating them to change, improve and discover effective ways of treatment
- Up to date screening supports workplace safety ensuring a person is fit to undertake their role i.e. vision tests
- Showing that employees are valued leads to an improvement in happiness and productivity
- Builds trust, reinforcing the employer’s commitment to employees by showing concern and care – improves staff retention, boosts productivity and improves engagement

Support
Always suggest a person contacts their GP if they have any concerns regarding their health
- NHS Health Check – is a health check-up for adults in England aged 40 to 74. It is designed to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia. As we get older, we have a higher risk of developing one of these conditions. An NHS Health Check helps find ways to lower this risk. If you’re in the 40 to 74 age group without a pre-existing condition, you should receive a letter from your GP surgery inviting you for a free NHS Health Check every 5 years. You can also call your GP surgery to book a Health Check
- The free Midlife MOT website – encourages people to review their skills and brings together trusted services to help you start thinking about your work, health and money with future planning in mind
- Screening programmes – for details of screening programmes, including Cancer (Breast, Bowel and Cervical), Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA), Diabetes and Eye, when and how you will be called and more details about the process
- Sexual health – for details of services, clinics and screening, including home screening and access to confidential help and support
- eC-Card – Free Condoms – this App allows 13-24 year old Wiltshire residents to find condom collection points on a map. They can then visit a venue of their choice to pick up free condoms discreetly
- Access to Work – is a Government scheme to help you get or stay in work if you have a physical or mental health condition or disability. The support you get will depend on your needs. Through Access to Work, you can apply for:
- a grant to help pay for practical support with your work
- support with managing your mental health at work
- money to pay for communication support at job interviews
- Disability Confident employer scheme – GOV.UK – being Disability Confident is a unique opportunity to lead the way in your community, and you might just discover someone your business cannot do without. It was developed by employers and disabled people’s representatives to make it rigorous but easily accessible, particularly for smaller businesses.
